Emergency Disaster Remediation
Cumberland County, NJ

On August 14, 2011, parts of Cumberland and Salem Counties received over 14” of rainfall in less than 24 hours. This precipitation resulted in extensive damage to local roadways, bridges and other infrastructure. The Bridgeton Raceway, a 19th Century race connecting Sunset Lake to the Cohansey River through the current Bridgeton City Park, overtopped its bank and sustained severe damage. The eastern bank completely washed away in some sections and other portions of the raceway had large amounts of vegetative debris and significant scouring.

Fralinger Engineering was immediately on-site with City of Bridgeton officials and FEMA, working with both entities to repair the raceway with Federal Disaster Assistance funds.

Fralinger Engineering prepared topographic surveys and site plans for the City of Bridgeton and FEMA with extensive surveying as storms continued to modify the site conditions. We also prepared applications to NJDEP Division of Land Use Regulation to obtain Freshwater Wetland permits to reconstruct the raceway banks and flood control structure. The permitting required in–depth archaeological studies and numerous meetings and permit coordination. The construction included installing 50’ long galvanized steel sheeting, rebuilding the raceway dam structure to include two feet of clay material and a geosynthetic clay liner. All construction management services were provided by Fralinger Engineering.
